Fire departments don’t post a job opening for every open firefighter position. Instead, an eligibility list is created using a testing process. As openings occur, fire departments will reach out to individuals on their eligibility list in the order determined by their scores during the testing process. After a fire department reaches your position on the list, they will confirm that you are still interested in becoming a firefighter with their department. If you are still interested, there will likely be an additional background check, as well as a medical and psychological screening. After those final screenings are complete, you’ll be sworn in as a firefighter.
